Dear Room 101 Families,
I would like to start off by saying what a pleasure it has been working with your children already this year. Their eagerness and excitement to learn is part of what makes the role as a teacher so rewardable! One of my roles in the classroom has been to instruct their whole group math lessons, which I have really been enjoying. While studying Elementary Education at Michigan State University, I chose to pursue a focus in mathematics. I have a special passion for math because of the crucial role I have seen it play in my life, especially being a Type One Diabetic. I believe that math is all around us and I hope that is something that I can teach your children. I want to expose them to a variety of ways they can learn different topics to help build their mathematical knowledge. I hope students will enjoy learning math as much as I do and see the relevant role it plays in our lives! What is coming up? Beginning in November, I will start a ten-day unit following what we have been learning in math this far. This unit will focus on reading and writing numbers, counting, and making comparisons in different mathematical contexts. Students will be working on sorting shapes in categories in order to learn the different characteristics shapes have. They will also be able to identify numbers in several ways because we will be looking at different representations of the same numbers to help build on their number recognition as well as their counting skills. What can I do at home? The students will be receiving math homework in their homework packets each week. This will provide them with extra practice outside of school. Some of the homework may include activities like having them count how many steps it takes them to walk from the sidewalk to the front door or having them go on a scavenger hunt to find the numbers 0-9 throughout their home. Another thing you can do at home in addition to the homework they will be receiving is to point out where math is being used outside of school (ex: numbers on houses, the microwave, TV channels, etc.), so that students can see that we are surrounded by math and understand the importance of learning it. Thank you for all of your help and support! If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me. Sincerely, Ms. Pascente Comments are closed.
